You can get lucky at the pound, BUT, you also get all the baggage that came with the dog. Hunting traits are an "additive trait" that is inheritable. This is why some hunter lines are so good. The only problem is that bad hips, elbows, eyes, etc. can also be inherited.
Personally, I hand pick puppies after extensive testing starting at about 2-3 weeks of age. I test the pups at two separate ages. This technique is primarily for people hunters but I have found it successful for critter hunters, too.

Ronin, i believe ya....i got one pound puppy that has had bad hips ever since he was 2-3 , he's now going on 12 and he has to stay at home when i take the others out, it's so sad....but he understands, lol....I will continue to go to the shelters to look for dogs.....not my bloodhounds, but the others, lol.....they just had a litter of bloodhounds there, my neighbor got one, it's a mix bigtime, but it has a home now, so i'm happy.....the hubby almost got me one for Easter, i'm glad he didnt....i dont need another dog, my hands are full.....i think everyone should have a dog of thier choice and then a rescue....some of the best friends i have had were mutts...

I think you have the right idea. I love dogs in general, sheez, I've got five runnin' aroound out back! I've just come to the conclusion now that if I have to have a work dog, I have to start with testing a litter of pups. They could be a pound litter, but I have to see the young ones. The problem that I've run into is that most dogs never make the grade and the wash-out rate is about 80%. By puppy testing I can get that number down to about 20%.

You cant a much better blood line than my coon dog has, but she is 2yo and still learning that they climb. One of the guys I hunt with has an unregistered Walker out of a couple of "yard dog" walkers that wins damn near every hunt he is entered in.
