Anyone casting their own? Friday nights are my casting night. Sit down at the shop and crank out a variety. Last 3-4 Friday's been doing the .44 round balls for my revolver. Not sure what I'll cast tonight.

Last night was .530 roundballs. Cast 200 that I know of...after that the beer got the best of me. Without going down there and checking...I don't know what I ended up with.

Need to give it a try huntress. Something special about shooting your own bullets. Recently helped get a gentleman started casting his roundballs for a .54 TC. Guess he really enjoys it. Told me he's made 1700 of them and already shot around 700. Had sent him some .527 roundballs is what unleashed the demon. lol

quigley, I just found this thread, so I'm a little late. I used to cast round balls when I was shooting a lot several years ago. Mostly 440's, 395's and 490's. I used an old Coleman stove so long that the grating sagged down from the weight of the pot. It sure was a lot of fun. I think I'm gonna get back into the ML shooting a little more. I kinda miss it sometimes.

I got a Lee pot and cast for my handguns..can't afford to shoot them if I didn't. I also cast for my .54cal and .58cal. flintlocks. I use a .62cal. flintlock to spring gobbler hunt with and one day will probably cast for it. I've shot a total of one round ball in it. .610" bare ball on a felt cushion wad with over shot card. I built that gun just for birdshot..but may one day decide to hunt deer with it. I use a little bit of wheel weights in my .58cal. .565's and .570's. I use bout 1 part wheel weights to 4 parts pure lead...just for a little more penatration...will hopefully see how it does this yr.

I don't cast for my .44cal. blk pwder handguns..don't shoot them enough..too much trouble to clean. I do cast for .10mm., .44mag. and 45LC. Cast bullets is all I use in them anymore. I cast 175gr. for 10mm., 250gr. and 310gr for 44mag. and couple of 250 or so grains and one 300grs for the 45LC.

Well you're outta luck...recently acquired 3000 wadcutters for a .38/.357 from my brother-in-law. They'd been in an attic I'd gathered for many years. Had already been aloxed...open box and had years of dirt on them. Kept 600-700 that were sealed and still clean. Have melted most of the rest down.

That's one of the good things about casting, if you change your mind you can just melt um and make a different bullet.

Some salvage/recycling yards may have lead. If need be, you can order it from Midway USA.

I've been fortunate to bum mine from different people. Now on my lead for everything besides muzzleloaders...I get wheel weights from the tire shops.

I get wheelwights from my buddy at the tire place too. Last lead I got my ladyfriend got me from the place she works. They had some construction done and the roofers left a lot of lead flashing. She also got me about 20' of 2" x 1/4" brass they had around there. Made my side plate and toe plate on my last flintlock out of some of it. Wonder if I could melt it and me some brass balls...they might come in handy.
